Diwali Gifting, Handmade with Love
There is a Diwali gifting routine we know by heart: a box of sweets, some dry fruits, repeat. Most of us know it is usually a last minute pick. So we made a festive candle gift box when you want to give something more thoughtful, something handmade that still lasts after the festival lights fade. If you've been looking for handmade pottery gift ideas in India that aren't just another thing to dust, this is our small answer.
Fair warning: These candles almost didn't happen this year due to time constraints. But skipping them felt like breaking a long-standing tradition, so here we are.
Why a Handmade Gift Feels Different at Diwali

Diwali is a season of giving and a lot of what gets passed around is lovely but forgettable. A handmade gift sits differently. Every ceramic container in this box is made by hand in our studio, so no two are exactly alike and it's the kind of thing people actually keep using instead of tucking away in a cupboard.
Also, honestly, these aren't only a Diwali thing. They're for the festival, and for every quiet evening that comes after it.
Inside the A Clay Story Diwali candle gift box
Here's what arrives at your door, in a brown box with a little gold foil on the lid:
- Two fragrant soy wax candles, each 150 g, in matching handmade ceramic containers.
- A card with instructions on how to burn them and how to clean the containers once the candles are done
- A handwritten postcard, because we like doing it that way
Each box is one scent in one container, a fixed pairing. We've matched each fragrance to a vessel on purpose, so you get the whole thing as we imagined it.
Three Boxes, Three Scents
1. Cinder with Amber Ash:

The Cinder container has a bronze, ember-like glaze that looks a bit like something still glowing after the fire has settled. The scent follows suit: smouldering woods, soft smoky embers, creamy vanilla and golden amber. It's warm and nostalgic, the feeling of a cosy evening indoors, crackling logs, flickering light and the warmth that lingers long after the flames are gone.
2. Poppy with Oudh

Poppy is a ribbed, matte green vessel, rounded like its namesake. Oudh is rich, complex and a little mysterious: warm, woody and earthy, with notes of musk, leather and spice. When it's lit, the room fills with something smoky, balsamic and slightly sweet. If you like fragrances with some depth to them, this is the one.
3. Monet with Vanilla

Monet is soft and painterly, and Vanilla matches it: warm, creamy and comforting, with a gentle sweetness. It's rich without being overpowering, so it wraps the room in something familiar rather than announcing itself. It's the easiest one to love.
Why a pair of candles makes a good gift

We put two candles in every box for a reason.
A single candle is nice. Two gives you options:
- Light one tonight and save the other for a day you need it
- Put one in the living room and one by your bed
- Hand over the pair as one gift, for a home that's hosting everyone this Diwali
Each candle burns for 30+ hours, so even one gets you through a good number of evenings. Follow the burning instructions in the box for the best results.
What happens to the containers after the candles burn down?
This is my favourite part. Once the wax is gone, the ceramic container is yours. The card in the box explains how to clean it, and after that it's a small handmade ceramic piece you can use however you like: pens on your desk, a little dish for keys, dried flowers on a shelf. The gift doesn't end when the candle does.

Adding a note
Every order comes with a handwritten note from me. If you're sending the box to someone else, leave your message at checkout and we'll write it out from your side.
If you're having all your gifts shipped to yourself and handing them out later, we can send blank postcards along with your order so you can write them in your own handwriting.
Ordering for family, friends or the office
We love thoughtful gifting, and plenty of you order several boxes at once. Here's what's worth knowing before you do:
- Each piece is handmade, so we only make a limited batch every year. Once the website listing goes live, the boxes tend to sell out quickly.
- For larger orders of 25 sets or more, we can also customize the containers and fragrances. Container customisation needs to be pre-ordered at least two months in advance.
- Handwritten notes are available for bulk orders as well.
Order dates and delivery before Diwali
For Delhi NCR, we can ship up to two days before Diwali.
For orders outside Delhi NCR, we stop shipping one week before Diwali. The festive rush slows everything down and we can't guarantee on-time delivery after that.
One more thing: candles can't be express shipped. Security tends to pull them out, even on flights. So if the box is going to someone in another city, order a little early and give it the time it needs.
Caring for your candles
The instructions come with the box and they're short. Burn them as described for the best results and a clean burn. For general care of the rest of your handmade ceramics, you can read our care guide.
